Which language is easiest to learn?
The US Foreign Service Institute estimates how many weeks of full-time study English speakers need to work in each language. Here is where the languages Tooter teaches land.
Italian and Portuguese are the quickest. Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean take the longest, mostly because of new writing systems and grammar unlike English. In every one of them, simple conversations come long before professional ability.

Questions learners ask
What is the hardest language to learn?
For English speakers, the US Foreign Service Institute puts Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean in its hardest group, at about 88 weeks of full-time study. They use writing systems unlike English and grammar that works differently. Hard doesn't mean out of reach: spoken phrases come long before reading.
What is the easiest language to learn?
Of the languages Tooter teaches, Italian and Portuguese are the quickest for English speakers, at about 24 weeks of full-time study by the US Foreign Service Institute's estimate, with Spanish and French at about 30. All four use the English alphabet and share thousands of words with English.
Is Korean harder than Japanese?
The US Foreign Service Institute puts both in its hardest group for English speakers. The biggest difference is writing: Korean's Hangul has 24 basic letters you can learn in days, while Japanese mixes two syllable alphabets with thousands of kanji. Their grammar is similar: the verb comes last and politeness changes the words you use.
How long does it take to learn a language?
The US Foreign Service Institute estimates 24 to 30 weeks of full-time study for languages close to English, like Spanish and French, 36 for German, 44 for Russian and Turkish, and 88 for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. That's for professional working ability. Simple conversations come much sooner with daily speaking practice.
Which foreign language is best to learn?
The one you'll actually use: the language of people you talk to, places you travel or shows you watch, because using it keeps you practicing. Without a reason yet, Spanish is a practical first pick in the US. It's the most spoken language there after English, and one of the quicker ones to learn.
What's the best way to learn a new language?
Speak from the first day. Learn a few phrases you'll really use, listen to native speakers say them, and say them out loud yourself. Then build up to short conversations. Grammar and vocabulary stick better once you've used them to say something.
How many hours a day should I practice a language?
A little every day beats a lot once a week. A short daily session of listening and speaking keeps what you learned fresh, and you can add reading or grammar on top when you have more time.
Can you learn a language with an AI tutor?
An AI language tutor is a way to practice speaking whenever you want, without worrying about being judged. Tooter's tutors are lifelike AI characters, not human teachers. You talk out loud about everyday situations, and they reply, point out pronunciation, grammar and word choice as you go, and let you try again.
