What Max adds over Super
Super Duolingo removes ads and the free plan's limits. Duolingo Max includes everything in Super and adds two AI features: Video Call, a spoken call with the character Lily (or guided calls with Falstaff the bear, for beginners), and Roleplay, scripted real-world scenarios with feedback at the end. Explain My Answer, which used to be part of Max, became free for everyone in January 2026.
How speaking practice differs
Duolingo's blog describes Video Calls of about one minute early in a course and up to about three minutes later, and Max subscribers can call as often as they like. Lily adjusts to your level, usually starts on a topic you just studied and doesn't correct your grammar during the call; you get a transcript afterwards. Falstaff's calls are guided, with suggested phrases and feedback in your own language.
Tooter starts from the conversation. You pick a lifelike AI tutor by language, accent and coaching style, choose a session of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes, and talk the whole time. Your tutor corrects pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency as you go, at your level, and can explain in your native language when you're stuck. Guided lessons build the phrases you then use in conversation.
What Duolingo Max costs
Duolingo doesn't publish Max prices: the app shows the price for your country when you upgrade, as an individual plan or a family plan for six accounts. The US App Store's listed purchases show Super options from $9.99 to $119.99 and no Max item. Max is bought in the iPhone or Android app; a Super plan bought on the web can't be upgraded to Max.

Languages and devices
Max features work only in some courses. Roleplay is for English speakers learning French, Spanish, German, Portuguese or Italian, and for some courses that teach English. Video Call covers up to nine languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese, plus Japanese, Korean and Chinese in newer rollouts. Max runs on iPhone and Android only, not on the web; in a course without Max features you get Super.
Tooter teaches 12: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian and Turkish. It's an iPhone app today, with Android coming soon; you can build a speaking plan and subscribe on the Tooter website, then sign in to the app with the same account.
Can you use both?
