How speaking practice differs
Free Duolingo lessons include speaking from day one: you repeat words, say sentences aloud and work through short dialogues, and the Practice tab has speaking-only sessions. For open conversation, Duolingo has two AI features. Video Call is a spoken call with the character Lily (or Falstaff the bear, for beginners), and Roleplay walks you through scripted real-world scenarios. Both come with Duolingo Max, on iPhone and Android, in some courses.
Tooter starts from the conversation. You pick a lifelike AI tutor by language, accent and coaching style, choose a session of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes, and talk the whole time. Your tutor corrects pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency as you go, at your level, and can explain in your native language when you're stuck. Guided lessons build the phrases you then use in conversation.
What each app costs
Duolingo's lessons are free, with ads and daily limits. Super Duolingo removes those, and Duolingo Max adds Video Call and Roleplay; both come as individual or family plans. Duolingo doesn't list prices on its website: the app shows the price for your country, and the US App Store lists Super options from $9.99 to $119.99.

Languages and devices
Duolingo teaches far more languages: 40+ for English speakers, with courses from about 32 other languages. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web, though Max is mobile only.
Tooter teaches 12: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian and Turkish. It's an iPhone app today, with Android coming soon; you can build a speaking plan and subscribe on the Tooter website, then sign in to the app with the same account.
Can you use both?
Yes. They're separate apps, and they do different jobs. Keep your Duolingo streak for daily vocabulary and grammar, and open Tooter when you want to practice saying it out loud, from a five-minute warm-up to a half-hour conversation.
