The short answer
- ChatGPT can be a speaking partner: its voice mode talks in many languages, and OpenAI suggests it for language practice. You decide what to practice and ask for corrections yourself.
- Tooter is built for it: a tutor you pick leads a 5 to 30 minute conversation at your level and corrects pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary as you go.
- Already pay for ChatGPT? Try both: ChatGPT's paid plans include hours of voice a day, and Tooter has free lesson chapters.

Can ChatGPT teach you a language?
ChatGPT can be a patient conversation partner. OpenAI suggests its voice mode for practicing a language, with examples like ordering an iced latte in Japanese. You can set a preferred voice language or switch mid-conversation, ask it to slow down, have it translate between two languages, and, since June 2026, ask how a word is pronounced and hear it. What OpenAI doesn't describe is a language course: there are no levels or lesson plan, and no official feature that checks your own pronunciation. You choose what to practice, and you ask for corrections.
Tooter starts from the conversation. You pick a lifelike AI tutor by language, accent and coaching style, choose a session of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes, and talk the whole time. Your tutor corrects pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency as you go, at your level, and can explain in your native language when you're stuck. Guided lessons build the phrases you then use in conversation.
What each costs
ChatGPT has a free plan with limited voice chats. In the US, Go is $8 a month (it may show ads), Plus is $20 a month and Pro starts at $100 a month, all billed monthly. OpenAI's voice help page measures voice use over a rolling 24 hours: 3 hours on Go and Plus, 15 hours on Pro 100 and unlimited on Pro 200, with no published number for the free plan.

Languages and devices
ChatGPT's app comes in 59 languages, and OpenAI adds native-sounding voices for seven, including Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish; it doesn't publish a separate list of languages for voice. It runs in a web browser, on iPhone, iPad and Android, and in desktop apps for Mac and Windows, for ages 13 and up.
Tooter teaches 12: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian and Turkish. It's an iPhone app today, with Android coming soon; you can build a speaking plan and subscribe on the Tooter website, then sign in to the app with the same account.
Can you use both?
Yes. ChatGPT is handy for quick questions about grammar, translations and how a word sounds. Tooter is where you practice saying it, with a tutor who keeps the conversation at your level and corrects you as you go.
